DOSBox-X operates similarly to DOSBox but with expanded capabilities. While DOSBox primarily focuses on running DOS games, DOSBox-X goes beyond that. It shares compatibility with the extensive array of DOS games and DOS gaming that DOSBox was designed for, but it also serves as a platform for running DOS applications. Additionally, it can emulate environments for running Windows 3.x, 9x, and Me, along with software developed for those versions of Windows.
With the inclusion of official support for Windows 95, 98, and Me emulation and acceleration, the aim is to revive the experience of playing or using old Windows applications and games. Additionally, DOSBox-X has incorporated support for DOS/V and NEC PC-98 emulations, enabling users to play DOS/V and PC-98 games with ease.
DOSBox-X prioritizes general emulation and accuracy, offering a variety of features for different purposes which have been incrementally added since it was forked from DOSBox SVN Daum. The aim is to provide users with all the necessary options to emulate everything from the original IBM PC system to late 1990s configurations to ensure that your game or software package runs smoothly. The ultimate goal is to make DOSBox-X a complete emulation package, covering all pre-2000 DOS and Windows 9x-based system scenarios, including peripherals, motherboards, CPUs, and all types of hardware made for PC hardware.
